German Strategy 1943 - Middle East Enquiry. Note by Secretary

1 Nov 1942

Para.15. View here regarding quote collapse unquote of Italy is that present Government cannot ask for terms being dependent on German support and sure of Allied disfavour. Is there firm evidence that quote for first time Italians beginning seriously think of alternative regime unquote. Are we in touch with any important movement of this kind inside Italy. Our impression based on examination great number P.W. including senior officers is that although large section of country prepared and possibly glad to see end of regime there exists at present no serious alternative while threat to Italy itself might act as unifying factor.
