Future Planning Section Requirements - The Balkans. Note by Secretary

1 Nov 1942

We should be grateful for information on the following. 1. What will be the political reactions of TURKEY in each case; is she likely to enter the war? 2. If the Germans abandon ITALY are they likely to try and retain control of VENEZIA, TRIESTE and FIUME? 3. In Appendices A and B of J.I.C.(42)490, cases (b) and (d) are applicable to our terms of reference. It is requested that case (e) should be added, giving similar tabulated information to meet our assumption (ii) above. It would appear from cases (b), (d) and (e) that German deficiency will be apparent and we should like your opinion as to the possible strength and dispositions of German forces in the MEDITERRANEAN and BALKANS.
