To:Secretary, J.I.C. (Copy to Secretary J.P.S.) From:F.P.S., War Cabinet Offices, Gt. George Street, S.W.1. 24th November, 1942. Ref: M/247 With reference to our previous note M/225x dated 22nd October and your reply thereto, we are continuing our investigation of possible operations in the IBERIAN PENINSULA on the following assumptions:(a) The Spaniards resist German aggression (b) Spain will ask for Allied assistance as soon as the Germans cross the Franco-Spanish Frontier but no Staff conversations will have been held beforehand (c) No infringement of Spanish territory is possible prior to German aggression (d) The Spaniards will only fight a delaying action on the line of the Pyrenees and their main defensive battle will be fought on the EBRO or further southwest (e) The object of Allied operations will be to assist the Spaniards to prevent the Germans establishing themselves in Southern Spain 2.
