A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include Axis intentions in Africa and the Middle East; the release of casualty information; the possibility of Germany occupying Vichy France; the security of Operation Torch, and the likely enemy response to the operation; the creation of the Inter-Services Security Board; possible reprisals against prisoners of war; Japanese strategy and manpower; Italian commitment to the war; the military strength of the Soviet Union and its ability to defend the Caucasus; the blockades of Germany; deception arrangements for Operation Torch; and the defences of Sardinia.
