A German Advance through Spain and Portugal. Note by the Secretary

(i) A German move into Spain takes place some time in the Spring. During the Winter months, the Germans have covertly prepared the way with the Spanish Government. 3. The Joint Intelligence Staff are accordingly invited to prepare a draft appreciation to include an estimate of the earliest date by which the Germans would be likely to cross the frontier into Spain and a time-table of the move thereafter. Answers to the following questions should also be included:German Action (a) What would be the enemy's objectives? (b) What would be the strength and direction of the enemy advance, and when would he reach each objective? (c) Would enemy Air Forces precede the advance of his land forces? When would they be ready to operate against the Straits of Gibraltar and in what strength? (d) Would the enemy occupy (i) The Canaries; (ii) The Balearics; (iii) The Azores; (iv) Spanish Morocco.
