Operation "Torch" - Possible Counter-Action by Vichy. Note by the Secretary

1 Aug 1942

A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC's reports. Subjects covered in this file include planning for Operation Torch; the extent of German and French knowledge of Allied plans in North Africa; the risk of a Chinese collapse; the threat to Iraq and Persia posed by German advances in the Caucasus region; assessments of Axis strength in Sicily; the predicted strength of German air raids on the United Kingdom in 1943; French public opinion on the bombing of targets in France; and the effects of Allied air raids on German morale.
