Mediterranean - Attack on Axis Supply Line. Report by the J.I.C.

1 Jul 1942

Port Capacity Estimate of G.R.T. (per day) arrived in July. Tripoli 2,500 3,000 tons 48,000 tons Benghazi 2,000 tons 70,000 tons Tobruk 1,000 2,000 tons 31,000 tons Mersa Matruh 200 tons Not at present being Derna 300 500 tons used except for coastwise traffic. (b) These figures do not indicate the vital importance of Tobruk to Rommel in his present forward position, since shortage of M.T. makes it difficult to transport stores from Tripoli and Benghazi to the forward areas. (c) In order to save transport by land and despite their difficulties, the Germans and Italians are hurrying on with the provision of more shipping and lighterage, improvising facilities at Sollum, Bardia and Derna, using aircraft and submarines for supplies, and in general doing all they can to speed up the arrival of supplies.
