Situation in Russia. Note by the Secretary

1 Jul 1942

TIKORETSK STALINGRAD near PROLETARSKAYA from bridgehead at NIKOLAEVSK and appear on 30 July to be on line running approximately due west from SALSK. Apparently little opposition to German advance southwards. across lower reaches of DON. Believe this opposition will increase when Germans reach more difficult country in CAUCASUS foothills. Possible course of this advance discussed fully in J.I.C. (42) 285 now being considered telegraphic summary of conclusions will follow. No likelihood Russians will be able stage other than weak counter attacks or do much more than stop German advance when it has lost impetus.
