French, Spanish and Axis Reactions to the Seizure of A Certain Island. Note by the Secretary

MOST SECRET ANNEX To: J.I.C. From: F.P.S. Date: 1st June, 1942. Ref. N/77. We are considering the possibility of seizing SARDINIA this Autumn in the event of hypothesis (a) of J.I.C.(42) 193 becoming likely. Our objects being as follows:(a) To keep the German Air Force fighting throughout the winter. (b) To enable MALTA to be strengthened and PANTELLARIA to be seized. (c) Thus to enable our naval and air forces from SARDINIA, PANTELLARIA and MALTA to sever Axis communications with Rommel and so, combined with an offensive from Libya, to force him to violate Tunisian territory, either by using it as a reinforcement route or as a means of escape from our Libyan assault.
