The following is an extract from the minutes of the (42) 159th Meeting of the Chiefs of Staff Committee held on 23rd May, 1942:"THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN. SIR CHARLES PORTAL drew attention to Italian Naval movements in the Eastern Mediterranean and suggested that they might indicate an intention to launch Naval or combined operations against Egypt.
