A Possible Axis Attack in Syria and Iraq. Note by the Secretary

1 Apr 1942

3. Evidence of German Preparations for an Attack on the Middle East. There is as yet no direct evidence to show that the Germans are preparing to launch an attack on the Middle East, but the following factors are consistent with an intention to do so: a. The relative strength of naval forces in the Eastern Mediterranean now favours the Axis to a greater extent than at any time since Italy's entry into the war. b. Rommel's forces in Libya are being strengthened and British ability to interfere with this process is seriously diminished.
