1 Apr 1942

APPENDIX 'A'. FUTURE OPERATIONS SECTION. FRENCH NORTH AFRICA. With reference to your note No. M/140 dated 29th April. 1942, the following are the views of the Joint Intelligence Staff on the probable reactions of the authorities in French North Africa should operation "Sledgehammer" be carried out. The authorities in French North Africa are anxious to avoid becoming involved in the war, and are likely to put off a decision whether to become belligerent until the outcome appears certain. Their reactions to "Sledgehammer" would be conditioned by the measure of success achieved by the operation.
