Rumours of a Military Nature Intended to Mystify and Mislead the Enemy. Note by Secy.

1 Jan 1942

Serial No. Submitted by Remarks of I.S.S.B. B. C. Suggestions. GERMANY (Contd.) 5. A week after Churchill's Free Austria declaration, a boat with 67 Austrian soldiers arrived in England from Brittany. They were the entire garrison from Pleubian. (Q/220). The return of the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau to Kiel has done more to empty the town than all the R.A.F. raids put together. The population panicked from the area surrounding the docks as the fear that the British will come now and really plaster the port, which they were not willing to do effectively at Brest.
