German Air Force Operations in 1942 Against the British Isles. Note by Secretary

1 Jan 1942

5. So long as the major German commitments on the Russian Front and in the Mediterranean area remain, the strength of the German Air Force on the Western Front is unlikely to exceed some 1,000 aircraft of all types, including a maximum of 250 bombers and 600 fighters, of which latter 250 will be defensive night fighters. The bomber force would be capable of a sustained effort of not more than 50 sorties and of a maximum effort of 80 to 100 sorties during any 24-hourly period. Offensive night fighter-bombers will probably operate on a scale not exceeding on an average 10 sorties per night during the Summer and Autumn of 1942.
