Possible Japanese Action Against the Netherlands East Indies. Note by the Secretary

1 Jan 1942

that at, any time, they may attempt an assault on Java and southern Sumatra aimed primarily at the domination of the Sunda Straits. This attack might be coupled with a simultaneous move through the Straits of Macassar (between Borneo and Celebes) against the eastern end of Java or against Timor for the purpose of dispersing our forces. An attack on the Sunda Straits would probably include attacks on the islands of Bangka and Belitong. The Japanese may attempt landings with a force of say a Brigade Group in Northern Sumatra.
