Possible Japanese Action Against the Netherlands East Indies. Telegram to C.-in-c., Far East

1 Jan 1942

ANNEX. TELEGRAM TO COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, FAR EAST. Following from Chiefs of Staff No. C.O.S. F.E. 69. The following are the conclusions of an examination made by the Joint Intelligence SubCommittee of the likelihood, timing and scale of possible Japanese attacks on the Netherlands East Indies. The logical developments of the present Japanese attacks on Malaya and the Philippines will be the seizure of both sides of the Sunda Straits to out our sea reinforcement route, and operations against Northern Sumatra on a scale sufficient to deny us the use of the aerodromes of Sabang and Medan.
