1 Jan 1942

A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include the defence of Malta, Gibraltar, and Singapore against possible invasions; Japanese strategy and intentions; the neutrality of Turkey; the Japanese shipping situation and Japanese economic strength; the spread of rumours intended to undermine German morale; predictions of Axis strategy in 1942; an assessment of the strength of the Axis troops in North Africa; the security threat posed by the Spanish workers in Gibraltar; economic warfare directed against Japan; and the possibility of German raids on Ireland, Orkney, or the Shetland Isles.
