Value of Naples to the Axis Powers. Report by the Joint Intelligence Staff

1 Aug 1941

4. Naples is one of the important naval dockyards in Italy and is the main storage centre for fuel oil for the Fleet. 5. Undoubtedly large supplies of military stores must have been built up in Naples or the vicinity and a vast and complicated administrative organisation for use of this port as a main supply base must have been set up. Reports tend to show that the Port of Naples is largely controlled by the Germans. 6. During the months of July, August and September some 670,000 tons of shipping sailed in convoy from Naples for Tripoli.
