The Alleged Views and Policy of Marshal Petain and Certain of His Colleagues. Note by the Secretary

1 Jun 1941

3. A month ago some Frenchmen believed Darlan traitorous. If at any time Petain can be convinced that this is so, he will treat him like Laval. Meanwhile, Darlan's actions following the British invasion of Syria have given cause to wonder whether he may not secretly be playing some mysterious game of his own. He categorically refused the German demand to launch the French Fleet against England or to use it to escort reinforcements for Syria and persuaded the Germans to regard the total loss of Syria as inevitable.
