A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include the possibility of future Nazi-Soviet collaboration; suggested rumours to be disseminated to undermine German morale; the attitudes and policy of the Vichy regime; the possibility of German paratrooper attacks on the British government in London; the sending of reinforcements to Malta; the possibility of German invasions of the Caucasus or Turkey, thereby posing a threat to the Middle East and India; the possibility of Japanese attacks on the Soviet Union; and the potential consequences of the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
