Possible Effect of a German-Soviet War. Report by the J.I.C.

1 Apr 1941

(d) Major operations elsewhere would have to be abandoned while the campaign was in progress. (e) The threat against our position in the Middle East would be diminished at any rate for the time being. A successful campaign would remove for Germany all possibility of Soviet military interference in Finland, Scandinavia, or the Balkans, and air threat on her eastern frontier, particularly against industrial and training areas for all services. It would finally eliminate for Germany the threat of war on two fronts, and leave her free, in the long run, to concentrate on the west.
