Cyprus: Scale of Attack On. Report by J.I.C.

1 Apr 1941

Farmagousta is the only port where it is possible for a ship to discharge alongside and it is considered that a reasonably well equipped force must use Farmagousta. This port is however situated at the eastern or more distant end of the island and its use involves a Journey of about 400 miles from Rhodes. (For reasons of secrecy alone it seems certain that Rhodes would be used as the port for embarking the expedition). Farmagousta is closer to Alexandria and conside ably closer to Haifa than to Rhodes and a glance at the map shows that an attempt to make use of this port would be hazardous in the extreme.
