A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include censorship of the British and American press; the possibility of a German invasion of Spain and Portugal; German strategy in the eastern Mediterranean, including the invasion of Crete; the production of rumours designed to undermine German morale; German psychological warfare; the possibility of a German invasion of the Soviet Union; coordination of intelligence with the United States of America; German strategy in North Africa; cover plans for British troop movements; the disruption of trade on the Danube; and the security of intelligence sources.
