Description

A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include the exchange of prisoners of war; the possibility of defending Britain from invasion with poison gas; rumours of Allied secret weapons intended to damage German morale; censorship and arrangements to reduce the leakage of information; cover plans for troop movements and military operations; the British invasion of Iraq; German infiltration of Morocco; German army movements in Libya; the strength of the Yugoslav armed forces; the possibility of a German invasion of Ireland, Portugal, and the Cape Verde Islands; and German strategy in the Balkans.
