6. The Japanese Navy consists of ten capital ships, eight aircraft carriers, and a number of cruisers and light craft. The Japanese have considerable experience of combined operations. They have sufficient good merchant ships to lift, at one time, some six divisions and the necessary air Personnel and equipment. (paragraph 15). The distances from Japanese bases to their probable objectives are great (see Appendix A). It is estimated, however, that a direct attack on the Malay Peninsula could develope within 9 days of the sailing of an expedition.
