ENCLOSURE. REVIEW OF THE SITUATION IN MADAGASCAR AND REUNION. A. POPULATION. (a) Madagascar. Total population about 3¾ millions. Of these, according to a recent report by a resident, 5,000 are French and 20,000 British Mauritians. Encyclopaedia Britannica, however, puts the number of French at 16,750 and the number of "foreigners" at 2,400. Mr. Twining, Director of Labour, Mauritius, has given the number of whites as 40,000. (b) Reunion. Total population about 187,000 (Encyclopaedia Britannica). White community very small.
