Italy: Policy in the Event of a Collapse In. Report

A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include the possibility of the collapse of Fascist Italy; the exchange of prisoners of war; the secret evacuation of government departments; the creation of rumours to be disseminated to harm German morale; the control of domestic censorship; the recruitment of agents amongst British expatriates; the organisation of commando raids in Italy; the likely strength of a Japanese attack on Malaya; the invasion of Madagascar by the Allies; the possibility of a German seizure of the Canary Islands; and the economic blockades of Germany.
