ANNEX COPY OF A TELEGRAM DATED 7TH NOVEMBER, 1940, FROM MR.GASCOIGNE, TANGIER, TO THE FOREIGN OFFICE. No. 688. MOST IMMEDIATE Situation in French North Africa. Andre tells me that in Residency circles at Rabat eventual hostilities with Spain (caused by possible Spanish adventure against the French Zone) is being freely discussed. Andre considers this would be suitable moment for a further appeal to be made to General Weygand based on the development of the international situation (a) recent changes in the attitude of Spain (b) elections in America and (c) Greek conflict.
