The machine used to achieve this result is a vast improvement on the flame-thrower, and two men are sufficient to operate it from a safe distance. It is believed that the British have installed this terrible machine on every open beach that could be used for a landing. (Note. Such a machine would not be an impossibility. Pipes could be laid under the sand or shingle with spray nozzles fed by a petrol mixture under pressure. Indeed it might be possible to adapt the ordinary rotating lawn sprinkler or sprinkler fire apparatus for this purpose.
