Propaganda and the Home Front. Memo. By Director of Intelligence, Air Ministry

1 Jul 1940

start the Spring campaign in good fettle. A start in the right direction has been made by the proposal to reintroduce Army Bands and it is suggested that efforts towards "showmanship" of this nature should be developed to the fullest extent to encourage a marshal spirit, sense of discipline, and self-respect in the troops and to show the civilian population that, through the great sacrifices which they are called upon to make, there is being built up an Army worthy of the country. It is suggested that the above conditions emphasise the importance of the Services actively interesting themselves in the efforts to be made to sustain the morale of not only the Forces but of the population as a whole and in the steps to be taken to counteract subversive activities by the enemy.
