Weekly Report of Department E.H. For Week Ending 13th July

1 May 1940

Serial No. Rumour. Action proposed. Action taken. 3. "Britain has a new and deadly mine, designed for the special purpose of preventing the landing of German troops in shallow draught boats. Its basic principle is that of the land anti-tank mine, but it has terrific power. It is calculated that if a string of tug-towed barges were to pass near one of these mines, which are controlled by a secret electrical mechanism, at least three of the barges would be damaged by the force of the explosion, and not only the one that actually struck the mine.
