A volume of reports, memoranda, and correspondence from the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include the potential German invasion of the United Kingdom; defence against an invasion; reports on the military capabilities of Italy, Spain, and Portugal; possible German secret weapons, including chemical and biological weapons; early warnings of an invasion; evacuation plans and instructions to British civilians in the event of an invasion; propaganda and censorship arrangements; the security of British territory in Africa and the Middle East; and domestic security, including the monitoring of aliens and arrangements to counter an invasion by disguised enemy soldiers.
