Middle East Intelligence Center. Letter Dated 16.4.40. from Colonel Cawthorn, Middle East Intelligence Centre, to the Secretary, Joint Intelligence Committee

1 Jan 1940

East Indies and A.O.C.-in-C. Middle East were at that time responsible. Since then the Balkans and South Russia between the Caspian and the Black Sea have been added to the responsibilities of the Commander-in-Chief, Middle East. Amendments to Appendices II and III of M.E.I.C. Charter are therefore necessary to enable the Centre to comply with both sub-paragraphs of paragraph 2 of the Charter. It is also for consideration whether some reference should not now be made in Appendix III to sources of information on Italy in view of the very intimate connection between Italian policy and the areas for which the Centre has to collate information and on which, in accordance with paragraph 5 of its Charter, it has to appreciate the situation.
