A volume of reports, memoranda, and correspondence from the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include a report on German intentions, foreign policy, military strength, armaments, and economic resources; the organisation of the Middle East Intelligence Centre; Anglo-French cyphers; German aerial attacks and bombing during the invasion of Poland; possible German breaches of international law; a report on the vulnerability of Soviet oil supplies; the communication of British foreign policy to military commanders in the Middle East; and possible measures to be taken in the event of a German invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands.
