3. USE OF THE TERM "MIDDLE EAST" THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a minute% by the Secretary, to which was attached a copy of a letter from the President of the Royal Geographical Society to the Prime Minister which had been referred to the Sub-Committee by General Sir Hastings Ismay, for advice on the preparation of a reply in consultation with the Colonial Office. In his letter, Lord Rennell reported that the Council of the Royal Geographical Society were anxious that there should be an authoritative ruling as to the approved scope of the terms "Near" and "Middle" East and asking that this should be made before the present use of "Middle East" crystallises into accepted practice.
