Minutes of the sixty-fourth Meeting of the sub-committee, held in the Secretary's Room, Great George Street, S.W.1. on Tuesday, 21st December, 1943 at 10.15 am

on transfer to another appointment, was vacating the Chairmanship of the Intelligence section (Operations), recorded their warm appreciation of the excellent work which he had done while holding this post, and instructed the Secretary to convey to him this expression of their appreciation. (ii) Agreed that wing Commander Murgatroyd should be the new Chairman of I.S.(0). (iii) Agreed that the Army establishment of I.S.(0) should be one G.S.O.2., one G.S.O.3., and two Junior Civil Assis- tants. 2. CARRIAGE OF I.S.T.D. MATERIAL BY AIR TO INDIA. THE DIRECTOR OF NAVAL INTELLIGENCE informed the Sub-Committee that the Inter-Services Topographical Department at Oxford were experiencing great difficulty in arranging for the despatch of certain publications regarding the Andaman Islands which were urgently required by India. The total weight involved was about 600. lbs. LT.COL. SANDERSON stated that his recent visit to North Africa had impressed him with the importance of I.S.T.D. material arriving on time. THE ASSISTANT CHIEF OF THE AIR STAFF (INTELLIGENCE) enquired how long it would be before I.S.T.D. India were able to reproduce material themselves, thus avoiding the sending out of bulk supplies of these publications. In reply it was explained that the necessary machinery was not yet available. THE CHAIRMAN said that he thought the best means of dealing with this would be for the Sub-Committee to recommend to the Air Freights Priority Board the urgent need for this material in India and to ask them to allot space as soon as possible. It was most important that the material now accumulating should be got away quickly. It would be useful if I.S.T.D. could give some estimate of how much material they would have for despatch to India each week. It was suggested that a reasonable demand would be for 300 lbs. per week. THE SUB-COMMITTEE:- Invited the Air Ministry to inform the Air Freights Priority Board that the Sub-Committee attached high importance to the urgent despatch by air of the present outstanding consigment of 600 lbs; and also that space should be allotted in future for 300 lbs. per week of material from I.S.T.D., for carriage to India. 3. C.S.D.I.C. IN NORTH AFRICA. (Previous Reference J.I.C.(43) 58th Meeting (0) Item 2) THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a telegram from A.F.H.Q. Algiers dated 13th December recommending that a deputy directorate should now be set up for C.S.D.I.C. in the Mediterranean Area; also a Minute by the Director of Military Intelligence dated 19th December covering a draft telegram in reply. - 2 -
