personnel for Headquarters South-East Asia Command and the Inter-Services Topographical Department. India. BRIGADIER VALE pointed out that this telegram seemed to cut across certain arrangements made with General Cawthorn on his recent visit to the U.K. If all the staff asked for by Admiral Mountbatten were provided it would seem unnecessary for I.S.T.D. (U.K.) to be strengthened to such a degree as they were being at the present time. In view of this, he had already despatched a telegram to General Cawthorn explaining the position. As regards the Intelligence staff for Headquarters S.E.A.C., he had taken up the matter in the War Office, with a view to ascertain- ing the policy for providing clerical staff for overseas Head- quarters. He suggested, therefore, that no further action need be taken on this point at present. THE SUB-COMMITTEE AGREED:- (i) To await India's reply to the telegram despatched by the War Office, before taking any further action as regards the staff of I.S.T.D., India. (ii) That no action was necessary at the present time on the provision of further Intelligence Officers and clerical staff for H.Q. South- East Asia Command.
