Minutes of the fifty-seventh Meeting of the sub-committee, held in the Secretary's Room, Great George Street, S.W.1. on Tuesday, 9th November, 1943, at 11.0 am

(ii) Invited Major-General Whitefoord to draft a reply accordingly, for the approval of the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee. 2. GERMAN CINEMA FILMS. THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a Minute by the Secretary (JIC/1753/43 dated 4th November, 1943) covering a Minute by 'C', making recommendations that German films of Intelligence value should be obtained and passed to the Ministry of Information, who already show German films to a limited audience, with the request that they should invite representatives, in appropriate cases, of D.N.I., D.M.I., A.C.A.S.(I). THE SUB-COMMITTEE:- (i) Thanked 'C' and agreed to his proposal: (ii) Agreed that representatives of the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Economic Warfare should also be invited in appropriate cases. 3. OPERATIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE FAR EAST. THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a Minute by the Secretary (JIC/1775/43 dated 6th November, 1943) Pointing out that the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee were still under an obligation to report to the Chiefs of Staff on the situation regarding operational Intelligence in the Far East. The report had been practically ready and showed that Intelligence requirements were well on the way to be met when the whole situation was changed by the arrival of two telegrams from India, one making new heavy demands for aircraft for photographic reconnaissance and survey, and the other making increased demands for aircraft for S.O.E. and S.I.S. THE ASSISTANT CHIEF OF THE AIR STAFF (INTELLIGENCE) said that it was hoped to obtain release of Catalinas from the West coast of Africa. A reply to this was being awaited from the Admiralty. By the first of March next year, India should have one hundred and thirty-six Liberators to cover the requirements of three squadrons and a training unit, and this should leave some for special Intelligence purposes. It was also thought that the flow next year, about March, would improve. The above referred to requirements for S.O.E. and S.I.S. He was not yet in a position to make a statement regarding the demands for photographic reconnaissance and survey. THE DIRECTOR OF MILITARY INTELLIGENCE and BRIGADIER SIR STEWART MENZIES said that the aircraft required for special Intelligence must be given a high priority. It was generally agreed that the whole question of meeting the demands made by India in the two telegrams referred to ought to be dealt with as a matter of urgency. -2-
