Minutes of the fifty-third Meeting of the sub-committee, held in the Secretary's Room, Great George Street, S.W.1. on Tuesday, 26th October, 1943 at 10.15 am

(ii) Agreed that, if possible, there should continue to be a central co-ordinating body: (iii) Agreed that the time had not yet come for crystallising points of detail: (iv) Invited the Chairman to circulate a Note to the Secretary of the War Cabinet, with a copy to General Ismay, informing them of the views of the Sub- Committee. 2. PROPOSED SPECIAL SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE J.I.C. (Previous Reference: J.I.C.(43) 47th Meeting (0). Item 3). THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a Minute by the Secretary (JIC/1665/43 dated 21st October, 1943) covering a Minute by the Director of Naval Intelligence, suggesting that a Sub-Committee should be formed to exploit special Intelligence in relation to the tactics and detailed planning of "OVERLORD". THE CHAIRMAN said that if C.O.S.S.A.C. considered this Committee necessary, it would seem to serve a useful purpose. He was in favour of it meeting only about once a fortnight under a specially selected Chairman. THE DIRECTOR OF MILITARY INTELLIGENCE said that he was against setting up another inter-Service organisation and wondered whether C.O.S.S.A.C. could not undertake this task themselves. THE DIRECTOR OF NAVAL INTELLIGENCE pointed out that he had discussed the matter with Admiral Creasey and it was considered that the examination of this special Intelligence was exactly what C.O.S.S.A.C. required. As yet, there was no particular inter-Service body studying the small items of information which had a bearing on Operation "OVERLORD". THE SUB-COMMITTEE:- (i) Invited the Director of Naval Intelligence to ascertain further the views of C.O.S.S.A.C. on this matter: (ii) Agreed to reconsider the matter on receipt of C.O.S.S.A.C.'s views. 3. "BODYLINE" THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a Minute by the Secretary (JIC/1678/43 dated 22nd October, 1943) covering a Minute by the Director of Naval Intelligence, drawing attention to the last report of Colonel Post's Committee, with special reference to the method of keeping the Chiefs of Staff in touch with the latest developments. -2-
