Minutes of the fifty-first Meeting of the sub-committee, held in the Secretary's Room, Great George Street, S.W.1. on Friday, 15th October, 1943 at 11.00 am at xxx

(v) At present the training in oriental languages for Y duties is carried out both at Bedford and at the School of Oriental and African Studies; and translators and interrogators are taught at the latter. With co-operation between the Services it might be possible to arrange for all this training for Y duties to be carried out at Bedford and thereby effect economies. (vi) A principal difficulty in expanding output is the lack of suitable instructors. It has, in fact, been necessary to take students and make them into instructors immediately on passing out. Unsuccessful attempts have been made to obtain instructors from Canada. The U.S. are probably making full use of their available instructors. Orientals would be unsuitable for the purpose. THE SUB-COMMITTEE :- (i) Invited the Director of Naval Intelligence, the Director of Military Intelligence and the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (I), to consider the possibility of concentrating all instruction in oriental languages for Y duties at Bedford on an Inter-Service basis; (ii) invited the Director of Military Intelligence to write to India, to ask for a statement of the present position and an estimate on broad lines to meet all future requirements, including these for all three Services, Civil Affairs and P.W.E. 2. PROPAGANDA MATERIAL FOR SOUTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a Minute by the Director of Military Intelligence dated 12th October, 1943, on the subject of a historical account of Mediterranean strategy which had been prepared by Sir Leonard Woolley, in order to meet a demand for suitable military propaganda material for South American Countries. After discussion THE SUB-COMMITTEE decided :- (i) That the book should not be printed but duplicated and copies issued to British Naval, Military and Air Attaches in South America. These officers should at the same time be invited to comment on the suitability of the book for this purpose; (ii) that the War Office should examine the possibility of expanding the book to include tactical studies in addition, as had originally been intended; and to consider the preparation of further books on other campaigns. -2-
