BRIGADIER VALE objected that if questions were asked two early about any given area the security of any proposed Operation in that area might be compromised. BRIGADIER LEE replied that the enquiries which he would address to the Ministries would be too general and cover too large an area for this danger to be serious and he said that when detailed planning for an operation was to be carried out, he would obtain all his information through Home Forces channels. (ii) THE SUB-COMMITTEE AGREED: (a) That BRIGADIER LEE should be empowered to make general enquiries to the various Ministries direct and (b) That information required for detailed planning should be obtained through Home Forces Channels. (c) BRIGADIER LEE said that the Administration of Territories (Europe) Committee had authorised him to deal with the Allies direct and that he had already obtained information from the Norwegians, Dutch and the Belgians. After discussion, THE SUB-COMMITTEE: (iii) AGREED that the same procedure should be followed in the case of the Allies as in the case of the various Ministries and Brigadier Lee might make general enquiries from the Allied Governments direct, but that information used for detailed planning must be obtained through Home Forces channels. (c) On the question of the supply of I.S.I.S. periodicals to the School of Military Government, Charlottesville, Virginia, THE SUB-COMMITTEE: (iv) AGREED that the matter should be left for decision by the Topographical Sub-Committee. (d) MR. LAWRENCE raised the question of the newly established Civil Affairs Board in Cairo, which he suggested, was finding itself in the same difficulties as Brigadier Lee's organisation. BRIGADIER VALE stated that Brigadier Hume, Director of Military Intelligence, Middle East, would be in London shortly and he suggested that this matter might be taken up with him. -3-
