1. MEETING WITH HIS MAJESTY'S AMBASSADOR TO TURKEY. SIR HUGHE KNATCHBULL-HUGESSEN said that the Turkish character was both determined and obstinate. In general, Turkey had friendly feelings towards Britain and realised that if we went down she would go down also. Some eighty per cent of the population of the country was made up of illiterate peasants who were apathetic as regards the war. It was a mistake to assume that Mohammedanism was dead in Turkey. While the policy of Ataturk's regime had been anti-Clerical and Islam was "disestablished" there had since Kemal's death been a slight revival of religion in Turkey.
