Description

A volume of meeting minutes of the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include British propaganda and censorship; contingency planning for the outbreak of war with Italy; preparations for combatting German offensives in the Netherlands, and for the defence of southern England; the recruitment and organisation of British citizens abroad; the assessment of German productive capacity and manpower; British domestic security measures, including the arrest and imprisonment of aliens; the treatment of British and enemy prisoners of war; possible German secret weapons, including poison gas; the Soviet threat to the Middle East; and the coordination of scientific research.
