Description

A volume of reports, memoranda and correspondence from the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include the security of foreign embassies; encryption and the potential interception of communications; Anglo-French military and intelligence cooperation, including plans for the defence of the Mediterranean and East Africa against Italian invasion; appreciations of the Soviet Union's military forces and the state of the armaments and supply situation of Poland; the organisation of military missions to Eastern Europe; and the organisation of British intelligence services, including the creation of a new Middle East Intelligence Centre.
