Responsibility for Coast Defence Intelligence. Note by the Secretary

1 Jun 1938

RESPONSIBILITY FOR COAST DEFENCE INTELLIGENCE. Note by the Deputy Director of Military Intelligence. During the discussion* on Paper No. J.I.C. 129 it became evident that before agreement could be reached it was necessary to define clearly the limits of responsibility for Coast Defence Intelligence between the Army and the Navy. It is suggested that Naval responsibility for collation should include the following, although much of it will be collected by the Army. Information regarding harbour and dock facilities, guns mounted for seaward defence and the forts which contain those guns; defence electric lights and emplacements; location of fire commands and communications between fire commands and batteries, etc., beaches, the siting of artificial obstructions, barbed wire etc., on beaches, and of the small arms and field etc.
