2 Command in the Mediterranean and Middle East. 4. In the event of hostilities with Italy, the Mediterranean, Egypt, North and North-East Africa, the Red Sea and the Arab-speaking countries of the Middle East must all be regarded as being one theatre of war. The present position regarding the main commands in this large area in peace and in war is summarised below. 5. Navy.—At the present time two Naval Commanders-in-Chief exercise naval control in the Mediterranean and Middle East. The Mediterranean station covers the whole of the Mediterranean and as far east as Suez.
