Spain: Intelligence Regarding Air Warfare. Report No. 2. Effects of Air Attack on Fuel Oil Storage

1 Jun 1937

(7,000 tons) tanks at Malaga. 5. There is no information regarding what means of firefighting, if any, were employed to cope with the outbreak. 6. The tanks first set on fire in the raid on Malaga on the 22nd August, 1936, were those containing spirit. One of the spirit tanks which survived this raid fell victim to the attack on the 14th October, the report of which mentions "a dull heavy explosion" when "the top of the tank apparently split open." 7. There appears to be little to learn from the scanty reports upon the subject of tactics for attack and defence, but it is noteworthy that fuel storages have been set on fire by explosive bombs, incendiary bombs and machine gun ammunition (probably of the Italian explosive type) with apparently equal facility.
