Man Power in Certain Foreign Countries. Note by the Deputy Director of Military Intelligence, War Office

1 Jun 1936

218 As regards the high percentage Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia propose to mobilize in one month compared with that of Italy, this difference is to be expected for the following reasons:(a) Italy has a far shorter land frontier contiguous to potentially hostile States than either Czechoslovakia or Yugoslavia. (b) Italy's frontiers contiguous to potentially hostile States all possess strong natural defences. Czechoslovakia's and Yugoslavia's frontiers do not. (c) Owing to Italy's geographical shape there is a definite limit to the number of troops that she could employ initially on her frontiers.
