Arrangements to extract an Egyptian singer from Syria

6 Nov 1942

A small file of correspondence concerning the extraction of Syrian singer Amira Amal el-Atrash to London in order to broadcast to Syria with the BBC. The singer had incurred some debts in Syria, and the Special Operations Executive (SOE) branch in Cairo was asked to pay these off to avoid the embarrassment to British prestige of hiring a debtor to broadcast to her creditors. Ultimately, it was decided that the plan did not fall within the SOE's area of responsibility.
