Possibility of Forming a Base in Sinai

22 Jul 1946

COPY THE WAR OFFICE, WHITEHALL, S.W.1. 13 August 46. TOP SECRET DDMI(I)/JIC/4/46 Secretary, JIC, Cabinet Offices. DMI is concerned about the situation which would arise if we should be forced by events to withdraw, not only from Egypt, but also from Palestine. It is obviously essential that we must have a base somewhere in Middle East. He considers, therefore, that JIC should invite the JIB to examine the possibilities of forming such a base in SINAI, assuming that the political difficulties could be overcome.
